TEAM MASON
Story
Mason is our inspiration to competing in this year's Run4Kids.
After a rough introduction to the world Mason was placed in special care at Barwon Health Hospital in Geelong immediately after birth. He spent 12 days here before heading home with us. During this time numerous doctors performed countless tests. He was diagnosed with hypotonia and bilateral congenital dense cataracts.
At just 10 weeks old Mason underwent bilateral cataract surgery at RCH. After just 7 short days he was fitted for contacts which we put in every morning and take out each night.
Mason was referred to the Genetics team at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) and after an agonising 5 month wait, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition known as Lowe syndrome.
Lowe syndrome affects roughly 1 in half a million people (mostly boys as this is carried on the x chromosome therefore girls are generally carriers). Lowe affects the eyes, brain and kidneys and boys are generally given a lifespan of 30-40 years (statistics have recorded fatalities as young as 19 months and as old as 57 years). This condition is not well known in Australia and is mostly prevalent in the USA and UK however there are a small number of boys here in Australia currently with Lowe.
Unfortunately Australia is not currently linked in with the Lowe Syndrome Association (LSA) however this is a goal we are aiming for!
We are beyond grateful for the continuous care Mason receives at RCH with his team of specialists. Please help us raise much needed funds to help these amazing children receive the care they truly deserve. In addition we would love your help & support to raise awareness for this devastating condition our little champion has been dealt.
Much Love Team Mason xx
